Choosing a wall clock for kids
Time is a concept that plays a very important role in our daily lives, and teaching children to read the time off a clock from an early age is an important milestone in the kid’s development. Nowadays, most rooms in a typical house have a wall clock and choosing the right clock for a particular room should be done with careful consideration. Choosing a wall clock for a kid’s room is no exception, and there’s more to it than just figuring out what looks good.

What’s most important is that a wall clock for kids is functional in that it makes it easier for a kid who’s learning to read the time, understand the concept behind it and learn why it matters.
The features you should be looking for in a wall clock for kids are the following:
- A clock for kids is not the same as a baby clock, which is purely intended as a decorative feature for the nursery. The face usually features beautiful designs, but simply isn’t suitable as a learning tool
- Make sure the clock has large numbers, which are easy to read. It’s hard enough for young kids to learn numbers, so why make it more difficult by getting a clock that displays small numbers? That reasoning applies more so if you plan on hanging the clock high up on the wall of course. A large font style will help a developing child recognize the numbers more easily and will help in understand numerals and the values they represent better.
- A clock with large numbers can help kids in better grasping units of time. Although it may be hard to imagine for adults, sometimes it’s not easy for kids to understand that one hourly unit does not contain 100 smaller units, as with other measurements.
- The hour and minute hands of the clock should be easy to distinguish, with a clear difference in length and ideally with different colours for each as well. Some clocks for kids incorporate small figurines on the clock’s hands, which will make it more difficult for a learning kid to read the time (and unnecessarily so).
To help kids learn how to read the time, there are specialised clocks that offer interactive learning through pre-recorded quizzes. The clock, once activated, will ask the child to find a certain time, say 4:05h, and will respond to how the child manipulates the clock’s arms. Such learning clocks often come with a small LCD display below the traditional clock face that helps to reinforce the time displayed by moving the hands.
With these simple tips it should be easier for you to make a well-informed choice about what wall clock would be a good purchase for your kid and give him/her an advantage by learning to read the time early on.
